The State Musical and Pedagogical Institute named after M. M. Ippolitov-Ivanov has been counting its history since 1919, when the folk music school No. 4 was opened in Moscow. In 1923, it was named after M. M. Ippolitov-Ivanov.
In the late 1920s, there was a division into a school and a college.
In 1986, the educational institution received the status of the Higher Musical School.
In 1995, the music school was transformed into the State Musical and Pedagogical Institute named after M. M. Ippolitov-Ivanov.
The founder of the GMPI named after M.M. Ippolitov-Ivanov is the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation .
